Pocket photo books
A photo book is a different object from an album: bound, finished, meant to be read rather than added to. For some sets of photographs it is the better answer.
A pocket photo book is a bound, finished volume rather than a sleeved album you keep adding to. For instant prints, a small bound book with mounting corners suits a complete set — an event, a trip — while a sleeved album suits an ongoing collection.

Book or album? They are different things
The words are used interchangeably in listings and they describe two different objects with different purposes.
| Photo book | Sleeved album | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Bound, finished | Pockets, open-ended |
| Best for | A complete set | An ongoing collection |
| Add more later? | Only if pages remain | Buy another one |
| How prints attach | Corners, or printed pages | Slide into a sleeve |
| Room to write | Yes — beside each print | Sometimes a caption strip |
| Reads like | A book | An archive |
| Typical cost | $25-35 | $15-23 |
The practical test: is this set of photographs finished? A wedding, a trip, a year — those are finished sets and a book suits them. Everything a camera produces from now on is an ongoing collection, and that wants an album.
A third option worth knowing about
There is a version of this that does not involve instant prints at all: printing a bound photo book from digital files through an online service. For a finished set — a wedding, a trip — that produces a considerably better object than mounting instant prints in a blank book, with printed captions and a proper cover.
We do not cover those services here, because this site is about cameras and printers. But it is the honest answer if what you want is a book rather than a collection of prints, and the instant prints can live in an album alongside it.
The middle route is a 4 x 6 printer at about 39 cents a print and a standard 4 x 6 album. Larger photographs, cheaper per print, and the easiest format in the world to buy albums for.
Mounting prints in a bound book
If you are making a book from instant prints, the mounting method matters more than the book.
- Photo corners. The right answer. They hold the print without bonding to it, and let it be removed later without damage.
- Double-sided photo tape, used sparingly at the corners only. Acceptable, with some risk.
- Glue stick across the whole back. Avoid. An instant print is a sealed chemical sandwich, and peeling it off can separate the layers.
- Magnetic or self-adhesive pages. Avoid, for the same reason.
Leave writing space beside each print. The captions are usually the part people value most in ten years, and a book of unlabelled photographs is considerably less interesting than a book of labeled ones.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a photo book and a photo album?
A photo book is bound and finished — meant to be read, with prints mounted on pages and room to write. A sleeved album has pockets, is open-ended, and is meant to be added to. A book suits a complete set like a wedding or a trip; an album suits an ongoing collection.
How do I mount instant prints in a photo book?
Photo corners. They hold the print without bonding to the back of it, so it can be removed later without damage. Avoid glue sticks, double-sided tape across the whole back, and magnetic or self-adhesive pages — an instant print is a layered chemical sandwich that can delaminate when peeled off adhesive.
Should I make a photo book or buy an album?
Ask whether the set of photographs is finished. A wedding, a trip or a single year is a finished set and suits a book. Everything the camera produces from now on is an ongoing collection, and that wants a sleeved album you can keep adding to.
Is a printed photo book better than instant prints in an album?
For a finished set, usually — a bound book printed from digital files has printed captions, a proper cover and photographs that will outlast instant film. The honest arrangement is both: a printed book for the set, and an album for the instant prints that were handed round on the day.
What size photo book do I need?
Match the page size to the print you are mounting, with room to write beside it. instax mini prints are 2.4 x 1.8 inches, full-size Polaroid prints 4.2 x 3.5, and 4 x 6 printer prints the easiest of all to buy for. Allow more page space than the print needs — captions are what make the book worth reading later.
