The best pocket photo albums

Most things sold as a pocket album do not fit in a pocket. Here are the ones that do, and the sizes they take.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

The Polaroid Go Pocket Photo Album is the only genuinely pocket-sized album with a verified capacity: 36 Go photographs in a 13 x 10 x 4 cm canvas case with a metal clip, at $17.99. For instax mini and 2 x 3 inch prints, buy a sleeved album with 2.4 x 1.8 inch pockets.

Pocket, bag or shelf?

Worth deciding before you buy, because the three are different products and the word "pocket" is applied to all of them.

For most people the small sleeved album is the right answer: big enough for a year of prints, small enough to keep somewhere accessible, and cheap enough to buy another one.

The 4 x 6 advantage

If your prints come from a printer rather than a camera, you are in much better shape on albums. 4 x 6 is a genuine industry standard — it has been for decades — so albums for it are cheap, plentiful, well made, and available in capacities up to several hundred.

Nothing in the instant-print world has that. Every instant format is proprietary to one manufacturer, and the album market for each is a scattering of third-party products. It is a small but real argument for a 4 x 6 printer over an instant camera if what you want is an album that will still be easy to add to in ten years.

What to check

  1. The pocket size in inches. The only specification that matters.
  2. Sleeved, not adhesive. Peeling an instant print off glue can delaminate the back of it.
  3. The actual dimensions, if pocketability matters. "Pocket" in a product name means nothing.
  4. Capacity against your shooting rate. 64 pockets is about 18 months of occasional use, or eight months of casual use.
  5. Whether it lies flat. Much easier to fill, and much nicer to look through.

Questions people ask

What is the best pocket photo album?

The Polaroid Go Pocket Photo Album is the only one with a published size small enough to genuinely qualify: 13 x 10 x 4 cm, holding 36 Polaroid Go photographs, at $17.99. For instax mini prints, a sleeved album with 2.4 x 1.8 inch pockets is the right purchase even though it is bag-sized rather than pocket-sized.

What size pocket do I need for instax mini prints?

2.4 x 1.8 inches (62 x 46 mm). The same pocket usually fits 2 x 3 inch ZINK and Polaroid Hi-Print prints too. Check the measurement in the listing rather than relying on the word "mini" or "instax" in the product name.

Do pocket albums fit Polaroid photos?

Full-size Polaroid prints are 4.2 x 3.5 inches, which is too big for anything genuinely pocket-sized — Polaroid's own small album at $14.99 is the compact option. Polaroid Go prints at 2.6 x 2.1 inches fit the Go-specific pocket album and very little else.

Are 4 x 6 albums easier to buy for?

Considerably. 4 x 6 is a long-standing industry standard, so albums are cheap, plentiful and available in large capacities. Every instant format is proprietary to one manufacturer, and the album market for each is a scattering of third-party products that change every season.

How many prints should a pocket album hold?

A genuine pocket album holds around 36, which is a set you carry rather than a collection. For storing a year of casual shooting — about 100 prints — you want a small sleeved album with 64 to 108 pockets, or Polaroid's large 160-print album.
