Film & Running Costs

How much instant film do I need?

Three different answers depending on what you are buying for. All three come down to the same arithmetic, and film only comes in whole packs.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

For a gift, include at least 20 shots — one twin pack, about $17 for instax mini. For a year of casual use budget 40 to 60 shots; for regular use 100 to 200. For an event, plan one photograph per two guests plus 20% spare.

If you are buying film as part of a gift

Include at least twenty shots. That is one standard instax twin pack, about $16.99 for mini.

The reason is specific: most cameras ship with no film at all, and bundles that do include film often include a ten-shot taster. Ten shots is gone in an afternoon, and then the gift needs a shopping trip before it does anything else. Twenty is the difference between a camera used that day and one waiting on a shelf.

What twenty shots costs, by format
FormatPacks neededCost
instax mini1 twin pack (20)$16.99
instax WIDE1 twin pack (20)$21.99
instax SQUARE1 twin pack (20)$22.99
Polaroid Go2 packs (32)$43.98
Polaroid i-Type3 packs (24)$56.97

That last row is worth sitting with. Twenty Polaroid photographs costs more than three times twenty instax mini photographs, because Polaroid packs hold eight and you cannot buy a partial pack.

If you are budgeting for a year

Most people overestimate how many photographs they will actually take. Here are realistic bands:

  • Occasional — 40 shots a year. The camera comes out at birthdays and one holiday. Two instax twin packs.
  • Casual — 100 shots a year. It goes to most social occasions. Five instax twin packs.
  • Regular — 200 shots a year. It lives in a bag and comes to everything. Ten instax twin packs.
  • Heavy — 300+ shots a year. At this point the film cost is substantial and a hybrid camera or a printer is worth serious consideration.

If you are buying for an event

The rule that holds up: one photograph per two guests, plus 20% spare. Then round up to whole packs.

Why 20% spare rather than 10%: at an event the camera is used by people who have never held one. They will double-expose, photograph the ceiling, and take three attempts at the same group. That is not pessimism, it is the normal failure rate of handing a camera to strangers.

The full event method, including batteries, instruction cards and why two cameras beat one above a hundred guests, is in how much film for a wedding.

The pack arithmetic, which trips people up

Film comes in whole packs and the pack sizes differ by format, so "I need 50 shots" turns into different numbers depending on what you are buying:

50 shots, by format
FormatPack sizePacks for 50Shots you getCost
instax mini20360$50.97
instax WIDE20360$65.97
instax SQUARE20360$68.97
Polaroid Go16464$87.96
Polaroid i-Type8756$132.93
50 shots, by format

Seven packs of Polaroid film for fifty photographs. That is the practical consequence of eight-exposure packs, and it is worth knowing before an event rather than during one.

When to buy a hybrid camera instead

If your honest estimate is over about 150 shots a year, do the sum with an instax mini Evo in it. Because it shows you the photograph before printing, you only spend film on keepers — at a realistic 50% keeper rate that halves the effective cost per photograph you wanted, and the camera's extra price comes back within a few hundred frames.

And if your estimate is over about 250, consider whether what you want is a printer rather than a camera. At 39 to 42 cents a print, high-volume printing is a different economic proposition entirely.

Storage, because film expires

  • Do not buy more than a year's worth. Every pack carries an expiry date and results drift either side of it.
  • Store it cool and flat, away from heat. A hot car or a sunny windowsill will damage film.
  • Use the oldest pack first. Obvious, routinely forgotten.
  • For an event, buy fresh. Film bought a year ago for a wedding is a false economy.

Questions people ask

How much film should I buy with an instant camera gift?

At least 20 shots — one standard instax twin pack, about $16.99 for mini. Most cameras come with no film, and bundles often include only a ten-shot taster, which is gone in an afternoon. Twenty shots is the difference between a camera used that day and one waiting for a shopping trip.

How much instant film do I need for a wedding?

Plan one photograph per two guests plus 20% spare, rounded up to whole packs. For 100 guests that is about 60 shots — three 20-exposure instax twin packs, roughly $51 of mini film or $66 of WIDE film.

How many photos a year will I actually take?

Most people take fewer than they expect. Occasional use is about 40 a year, casual use about 100, and regular use around 200. Pick your band honestly before choosing a format, because at 40 shots the film cost barely matters and at 200 it decides everything.

Can I buy a single cartridge of instax film?

Rarely, and usually at a price close to a twin pack. The standard unit is a twin pack of two 10-exposure cartridges, 20 shots in total, which is what every price on this site is based on.

Does instant film expire?

Yes. Every pack carries an expiry date, usually a year or two out, and color and contrast drift either side of it. Store film cool and flat, use the oldest pack first, and buy only what will be shot within a year — do not stockpile for a camera that comes out twice a year.
