Instax vs Polaroid: which should you actually buy?
This is the decision most people in this category are actually making. It is settled by two numbers: how big the print is, and what each photograph costs.
For a gift, buy instax. Its film costs about 85 cents a shot against roughly $2.37 for Polaroid i-Type, it comes 20 to a pack rather than 8, and it is stocked far more widely. Buy Polaroid only if the large 4.2 x 3.5 inch print is the specific thing you want.

Why the cost gap is so large
It is not branding. Three real things drive it. A full-size Polaroid print is 4.2 x 3.5 inches against 2.4 x 1.8 for an instax mini — over three times the area, so there is simply more chemistry in every sheet. Polaroid packs hold eight exposures where instax holds twenty, so the per-pack price understates the gap. And Fujifilm manufactures instax at an enormous scale, while Polaroid rebuilt the original production line from scratch after the brand was wound down.
Multipacks narrow it slightly. Polaroid's own five-pack of i-Type works out at about $2.12 a shot against $2.37 for a single pack — about 11% off, which is worth taking and does not change the ranking. There is more detail in why Polaroid film is so expensive.
What Polaroid genuinely does better
This is not a one-sided comparison, and it would be dishonest to present it that way.
- The print is an object. A full-size Polaroid is big enough to put in a frame on a shelf. An instax mini is a token; a Polaroid is a photograph.
- The white frame is the cultural reference. If the recipient has a specific image in their head, it is almost certainly the Polaroid frame, and no instax reproduces it exactly.
- Autofocus. The Now Generation 3 and Flip have real autofocus systems. Every simple instax is fixed-focus with a close-up mode.
- Modern Polaroids are nicer objects. Heavier, more substantial, with tripod mounts and filter compatibility.
- The development is part of it. Ten to fifteen minutes of a picture slowly appearing is a different experience from instax's ninety seconds.
What instax genuinely does better
- Cost, by a factor of nearly three. This is the whole argument, and over a year it is the difference between a camera that gets used and one that gets rationed.
- Film availability. instax mini film is in supermarkets and drugstores. Polaroid film usually means a trip or an order.
- Pack size. Twenty shots versus eight. A Polaroid pack can be gone in one afternoon at a party.
- Exposure reliability. Fixed-focus and fully automatic sounds like a limitation and behaves like a feature in the hands of someone who has never used an instant camera.
- Range. Three print formats and thirteen current models, including hybrids that let you choose what to print.

At 200 photographs the Polaroid Now costs roughly $595 all in; the instax mini 12 is around $250 including the camera. That is the comparison in one line, and it is why this page recommends instax for a gift and Polaroid only when the print is the point.
A third option neither brand advertises
If the goal is physical photographs rather than the ceremony of a camera ejecting one, a pocket photo printer beats both. Kodak 4PASS prints cost about 42 cents and Canon 4 x 6 prints about 39 cents — half the cheapest instant film and a sixth of Polaroid's — and you print the photograph you chose rather than the one that happened. Worth reading instant camera vs photo printer before committing to either brand.
Questions people ask
Which is better, Polaroid or Instax?
For a gift, instax: the film is about 85 cents a shot against roughly $2.37 for Polaroid i-Type, packs hold 20 rather than 8, and it is far easier to buy. Polaroid is better if the large 4.2 x 3.5 inch print with the white frame is the specific thing you want — nothing in the instax range reproduces it.
Is Instax film cheaper than Polaroid film?
Considerably. On 13 October 2026, a 20-exposure pack of instax mini film was $16.99 (about 85 cents a shot) and an 8-photo pack of Polaroid i-Type was $18.99 (about $2.37 a shot). A hundred photographs is roughly $85 on instax mini and $237 on Polaroid i-Type.
Can an Instax camera use Polaroid film?
No. The formats are physically and chemically different and are not interchangeable in either direction. Each camera takes exactly one film format, which is why choosing a camera is really choosing every film purchase for its working life.
Which lasts longer, Instax or Polaroid prints?
Both are instant film and both fade in direct sunlight, which is the main threat to either. Keep prints out of sunny windows, use UV-protective glazing for anything framed on a bright wall, and store the rest flat in a sleeved album. Dye-sublimation printer prints are more fade-resistant than either, because of the laminate layer.
Is Polaroid better quality than Instax?
Not in resolution terms — but the Polaroid print is much bigger, which makes the photograph more satisfying to hold and easier to display. Polaroid's modern cameras also have genuine autofocus, where simple instax models are fixed-focus. Exposure on the automatic instax models is arguably more consistent in ordinary use.
