Photography gifts under $50
There is no new instant camera under $50, so this page is about what fifty dollars actually buys — which turns out to be quite a lot.
Under $50 there is no new instant camera, so the best gifts are film and an album: two 20-exposure instax packs and a small album comes to about $49. Polaroid's coffee-table album is $34.99, and a string-and-clips display kit is under $20.

What $50 of film actually gets you
This is the arithmetic that makes film the better buy rather than a consolation prize. In this category the consumable is the expensive half, so $50 of film is a bigger gift than $50 off a camera.
| Film | Packs for about $50 | Photographs | Per shot |
|---|---|---|---|
| instax mini | 2 packs ($33.98) | 40 shots | $0.85 |
| instax WIDE | 2 packs ($43.98) | 40 shots | $1.10 |
| instax SQUARE | 2 packs ($45.98) | 40 shots | $1.15 |
| Polaroid Go | 2 packs ($43.98) | 32 shots | $1.37 |
| Polaroid i-Type | 2 packs ($37.98) | 16 shots | $2.37 |
Forty instax mini photographs for about $34 is a genuinely generous gift for someone who owns the camera. Sixteen Polaroid photographs for about $38 is the same money and a quarter of the pictures — which is the argument of this whole site in one row.

Three $50 gifts that work
- Two packs of film plus a small album — about $49. Forty photographs and somewhere to keep them.
- The coffee-table album plus one pack of film — about $52, slightly over, and the album is the nicer object.
- A Kodak cartridge plus a 4 x 6 album — about $45 for a Kodak printer owner: 60 prints at 42 cents each, plus somewhere to put them.
If the gift has to be a camera
Then $50 is not enough, and the honest options are:
- Put the $50 toward a camera and ask someone else to go halves. An instax mini 12 plus film is comfortably under $100.
- Buy used. A second-hand instax mini is often genuinely under $50. Prefer an AA-powered model, because a worn-out built-in battery is the end of the camera and you cannot see it in a listing photograph.
- Wait. A camera bought at the right price with film included is a better gift than a stretched one without.
What we would not do is buy a sub-$50 no-name camera. The ones at that price are generally digital toys with a thermal receipt printer inside: greyscale prints on paper that fades within months, on proprietary refills you may not be able to rebuy.
Questions people ask
What is the best photography gift under $50?
Two 20-exposure packs of instax mini film and a sleeved album, about $49 together — forty photographs and somewhere to keep them. If a single item is wanted, Polaroid's coffee-table album is $34.99 and its large 160-print album is $22.99.
Can you buy an instant camera for under $50?
Not new, from a manufacturer whose film you can reliably buy. We checked Fujifilm's and Polaroid's current US ranges on 13 October 2026 and the category starts around $70 to $90 — the Polaroid Go Generation 3 is $89.99 listed. Sub-$50 listings are used, discontinued, or thermal-paper toys.
Is film a good gift under $50?
It is the best one. In this category the film is the expensive half, so $50 of film is a bigger gift than $50 off a camera: about forty instax mini photographs for $34, against sixteen Polaroid photographs for $38.
What album should I buy as a gift?
One matched to the print size in inches, not the brand name. instax mini prints are 2.4 x 1.8 in, Polaroid Go is 2.6 x 2.1 in, and full-size Polaroid is 4.2 x 3.5 in. An album advertised as fitting "Polaroid" photographs will not hold an instax mini print securely.
Should I buy a used instant camera to stay under $50?
It is the only honest way to get hardware at that price. Prefer an AA-powered model like the instax mini 12, because a worn-out built-in rechargeable battery ends the camera's life and is invisible in a listing. As a gift it is a harder sell than film and an album.
