Gifts for someone who loves photography

Four budget tiers, with a real answer in each. The best gift in this category under $25 is not a compromise — it is the thing they will actually use.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

Under $25, buy film or an album — a 20-exposure instax pack is about $17 and an album about $15. Under $50, both. Under $100, an instax mini 13 with film. Over $100, the instax mini 99 for manual controls or the mini Evo for digital capture onto real film.

"Loves photography" covers a lot of ground, so this page is organized by what you want to spend rather than by who they are. Every tier has a real answer — the cheap ones are not consolation prizes.

Under $25: film, or an album

This tier is genuinely good, because both options are things people need and rarely buy for themselves.

The one thing to get right is the format. The seven instant films are not interchangeable, so check which camera they own first — instant film types explained has the compatibility table.

Under $50: both, or a better album

Two packs of instax mini film and a small album is about $49 and is a complete, useful gift. Or $34.99 on Polaroid's coffee-table album, which is the one that gets left out on a table rather than put in a cupboard.

What is not worth buying at this tier is a camera. There is no new instant camera under $50 — the category starts around $70 to $90, and the sub-$50 listings are used cameras, discontinued models or thermal-paper toys. The full explanation is here.

Under $100: a camera and film

This is where the real cameras start. An instax mini 12 or mini 13 plus a 20-exposure twin pack lands inside $100 together, and the Polaroid Go Generation 3 is $89.99 listed if the brand matters.

An estimate, not a quote: the hardware figure is the manufacturer or retailer listed price shown in each row, and the film figure is whole packs at the prices verified October 13, 2026. Film is rounded up to whole packs because you cannot buy half a pack.

Note what happens at a hundred photographs: the film costs more than the camera. That is why the mini is the recommendation at this tier over the Polaroid Go, even though both fit the budget.

Over $100: the interesting ones

  • [instax mini Evo](/instant-cameras/instax-mini-evo-review) — digital capture onto real instax film, a hundred effect combinations, and a phone printer. The most capable instax and the one that saves the most film.
  • [instax mini 99](/instant-cameras/instax-mini-99-review) — the only instax with exposure compensation, bulb mode and manual focus. The pick for someone who shoots deliberately.
  • [instax SQUARE SQ40](/instant-cameras/instax-square-sq40-review) — the best-looking simple instax, with the square print, at about $1.15 a shot.
  • [instax WIDE 400](/instant-cameras/instax-wide-400-review) — a format they almost certainly do not own, and the only instax that shoots groups.
  • [Canon SELPHY CP1500](/photo-printers/canon-selphy-cp1500-review) — not a camera at all. A real 4 x 6 photograph for about 39 cents, which is the better gift if their photographs are already on a phone.

Engadget, which publishes hands-on reviews, calls it “marries the vintage charm of instant photography with digital shooting”.

What to avoid at every tier

  • A camera with no film. The most common mistake. It turns a gift into an errand.
  • A bundle padded with stickers and marker pens. Check how many film shots are included: ten is a taster, twenty is a start.
  • The discontinued instax mini 11, which still appears on widely read gift guides. Fujifilm's current mini line is the 13, 12, 41 and 99.
  • Guessing at film format. Buying instax mini film for a Polaroid owner is a wasted gift, and vice versa.

Questions people ask

What is the best gift for someone who loves photography?

Under $25, film or an album — the two things they need and rarely buy for themselves. Under $100, an instax mini 13 with a pack of film. Over $100, the instax mini Evo for digital capture onto real film, or the mini 99 for manual controls.

What is a good photography gift under $25?

A 20-exposure pack of instax mini film at about $16.99, or an album at about $15. Both are things every instant camera owner needs. Check which of the seven film formats their camera takes first, because none is interchangeable.

What is a good photography gift under $50?

Two packs of film and a small album, about $49 together — or Polaroid's coffee-table album at $34.99. Not a camera: there is no new instant camera under $50, and the sub-$50 listings are used, discontinued or thermal-paper toys.

Is film a boring gift?

It is the one gift in this category that is guaranteed to be used. Film is what every instant camera owner runs out of, nobody objects to receiving it, and at 85 cents a shot a $17 pack is twenty photographs they would otherwise have paid for themselves.

Should I buy a camera or a printer for someone who loves photography?

A printer if their photographs already exist on a phone in large numbers — a Canon SELPHY prints a real 4 x 6 for about 39 cents. A camera if the appeal is the format's constraints: fixed exposure, no second attempt, one physical copy.
