instax mini Link 3 vs Canon SELPHY
This is really pocket versus desktop. One goes to the party; the other prints a real photograph for less than half as much.
The instax mini Link 3 is pocketable and prints real instax film at about 85 cents a shot. The Canon SELPHY CP1500 stays on a desk and prints a 4 x 6 photograph for about 39 cents — less than half the cost for a print more than five times the area.

The SELPHY costs more up front and is cheaper from the first year onward — and it is producing a photograph five times the size. If the printer is going to live in a house rather than a bag, the arithmetic is not close.
What the instax printer is genuinely better at
- Being there. A printer at home prints nothing at a wedding. 210 grams in a bag is the entire point, and it is not a small one.
- The print itself. Real instax film is a different object from a dye-sub photograph — the white border, the characteristic rendering, the fact that it looks like an instant print because it is one.
- Media you can buy anywhere. instax mini film is in supermarkets. A KP-108IN set is a camera shop or an online order.
- Handing it over. A 2.4 x 1.8 inch print goes in a pocket or a wallet. A 4 x 6 print mostly does not.
What the SELPHY is better at
- Cost, by more than half. 39 cents against 85.
- Print size, by more than five times the area. A 4 x 6 print fits a standard frame; an instax mini does not fit anything standard.
- Durability. Dye-sublimation with a protective overcoat, instantly dry and water resistant. Instant film fades in sunlight.
- Connection. Wi-Fi handles a modern phone's large files more reliably than Bluetooth.
- Print volume. A 108-print set means you are not reloading every twenty photographs.
A cheaper way to get 4 x 6 prints
The Kodak Dock Plus Retro was listed at $109.99 and prints 4 x 6 on 4PASS media at about 40 cents a print — within a cent of the SELPHY's cost per print, for $70 less up front. You plug a phone straight into the dock, which removes app pairing entirely and makes it the better choice for a less technical recipient. See best pocket photo printers.
Questions people ask
Is the Canon SELPHY better than an instax printer?
For a household, yes — a 4 x 6 print for about 39 cents against 85 cents for a much smaller instax print, and it is more durable. For carrying to events, no: the SELPHY is a desktop unit and the instax mini Link 3 is 210 g and fits a pocket.
How much does Canon SELPHY printing cost per photo?
About 39 cents for a 4 x 6 print — a KP-108IN ink and paper set covering 108 prints was $41.99 when we checked on 13 October 2026. The square SELPHY QX format works out higher at about 80 cents, because the XS-20L set is $16.00 for 20 prints.
Is a SELPHY portable?
The CP1500 is a compact desktop unit with an optional battery pack sold separately, so it can be moved but is not pocketable. The SELPHY QX20 has a built-in rechargeable battery and USB-C charging, which makes it the genuinely portable SELPHY — at $189.00 listed and about 80 cents a print.
Which printer gives the best photo quality?
The Canon SELPHY CP1500, which prints a 4 x 6 dye-sublimation photograph with a protective overcoat. Dye-sublimation beats both ZINK and instant film on sharpness and color accuracy, and the larger print holds considerably more detail.
