Gifts

The best instant camera to give your girlfriend

This is one of the few gifts in the category that is really a gift to both of you, because the prints end up on a wall or a fridge rather than in a phone. Which makes print size matter more than usual.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

The Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ40 is the best instant camera to give a girlfriend or partner: the square print is the shape people picture, it has a selfie mode for photos of the two of you, and film costs about $1.15 a shot. For a Polaroid specifically, the Polaroid Now Generation 3 makes the full-size print.

Why this gift works, and when it does not

An instant camera given to a partner is a gift with a second half built in: the photographs are almost always of the two of you, and they end up somewhere visible. That is a different proposition from a gadget, and it is why this is one of the safer bets in the category.

It misses in exactly one situation, and it is worth checking before you buy. If she already photographs everything on her phone and has never printed any of it, the gap is not a camera — it is printing. In that case the instax mini Evo above, or a plain phone printer, delivers what she actually wanted and the pictures already exist.

What to look for

  1. Print size and shape. The square frame is what people picture, and it holds two faces better than a narrow mini print. This is the single biggest decision here.
  2. A close-focus or selfie mode. Two people at arm's length are about 0.4 m from the lens, which is inside the range a simple camera needs a close-up setting for.
  3. Indoor performance. Most of these photographs get taken in a restaurant, a kitchen or a bar. Slow-synchro flash or a bright lens is what stops the background printing black.
  4. Running cost, honestly. The camera is the small half. At $2.37 a frame, a Polaroid that gets used weekly costs more in film in a year than it did to buy.
  5. Whether it looks like an object. This gift is partly an object. The SQ40's leatherette body and the Polaroid Now both pass that test; a pastel mini 12 is more of a teenager's camera.

The picks in detail

1. Best overall

Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ40

The square print everyone pictures, on film that costs half what Polaroid charges.

Buy it for
Almost anyone. It looks grown-up, it needs no explaining, and the frame suits two faces.
Skip it if
A tight budget — instax SQUARE film is about $1.15 a shot, not 85 cents.
  • A 2.4 x 2.4 inch square picture on 86 x 72 mm film: the shape people mean when they say Polaroid.
  • Selfie mode focuses from 0.3 to 0.5 m, which is the distance two people at arm's length actually are.
  • Slow-synchro shutter from 1/2 second, so an indoor photo keeps the room rather than printing black.
  • A leatherette body that looks like an object rather than a toy; Engadget calls the design retro and says it looks great.
  • CR2 batteries rated for roughly 30 film packs in Fujifilm's own test conditions, so it is not a camera that needs charging before a night out.

Running cost: instax SQUARE works out at $1.15 a shot. See every format’s cost.

2. Best if it has to say Polaroid

Polaroid Now Generation 3

The full-size white-framed print, and the only genuine Polaroid experience here.

Buy it for
Someone who has specifically mentioned Polaroid, or who likes the big print on a wall.
Skip it if
A heavy shooter. i-Type film is about $2.37 a frame — the highest running cost on this page.
  • The classic 4.2 x 3.5 inch print with a 79 x 77 mm image, which is twice the area of an instax SQUARE picture.
  • Twin-lens autofocus with zones from 0.40-1.3 m and 1.0 m to infinity, so close shots of two people are in focus.
  • Self-timer, double exposure and a built-in tripod mount for photos with nobody holding the camera.
  • Takes both Polaroid i-Type and Polaroid 600 film, so film is easy to find.
  • USB-C rechargeable, and built with 40% recycled materials.

Running cost: Polaroid i-Type works out at $2.37 a shot, so a hundred photographs in the first year puts the real total at about $366.86 including the camera. See every format’s cost.

3. Best if she takes a lot of photographs already

Fujifilm instax mini Evo

Buy it for
Someone whose phone is full of photos of the two of you that have never been printed.
Skip it if
A buyer who wants the gift to feel analogue. It is a digital camera with a printer in it.
  • Prints photographs already on a phone over Bluetooth — which is where the pictures of you both already are.
  • A 3.0 inch screen, so only the good frames cost 85 cents.
  • An f/2.0 autofocus lens, far brighter than any simple instax, so restaurant and bar photos work.
  • 100 effect combinations chosen before printing, which is the part people actually play with.

Running cost: instax mini works out at $0.85 a shot. See every format’s cost.

Someone who wanted the big square print. The mini frame is small.
  • Film at about 85 cents a shot — by far the cheapest running cost on this page.
  • Selfie mirror and Close-Up Mode from 0.3 to 0.5 m for photos of two people.
  • A squarer, more adult body than the mini 12, with identical optics and identical prints.
  • Two AA batteries, so it works the moment it is unwrapped.

The Polaroid print is roughly twice the picture area of the instax SQUARE and nearly three times the mini. If the plan is a photograph on a wall, that matters. If the plan is a photograph in a wallet or stuck to a laptop, it does not, and the mini is the better-value answer.

Read the 200-shot column, because a camera given to a partner is a camera that gets used. That is where the Polaroid's film cost overtakes everything else on the page, and where the instax SQUARE's $1.15 looks like a reasonable middle. We show the full workings on the Polaroid film cost page.

Who should buy which

  • She has mentioned Polaroid by name: Polaroid Now Generation 3. Nothing else makes that print.
  • You want the square look without the film bill: instax SQUARE SQ40.
  • Her phone is full of photos of you both: instax mini Evo, which prints them.
  • Budget under $100: instax mini 41, plus film.
  • She already owns a camera: film, an album and a set of frames. See photography gifts under $50.

Questions people ask

What is the best instant camera to give a girlfriend?

The Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ40 for most people: it makes the square print that people picture, has a selfie mode for photos of two people at arm's length, and its film costs about $1.15 a shot against $2.37 for Polaroid. Choose the Polaroid Now Generation 3 if she wants a Polaroid specifically.

Is a Polaroid camera a good gift for a partner?

Yes, with one caveat: the film is the most expensive in the category at about $2.37 a frame, so a camera that gets used weekly runs up a bill. If the print size is the point, it is worth it. If it is not, an instax SQUARE gives a similar square photo for about half as much per shot.

Which instant camera is best for photos of two people?

One with a close-focus or selfie mode and a wider frame. The instax SQUARE SQ40 focuses from 0.3 m in selfie mode and its square frame holds two faces comfortably; the Polaroid Now Generation 3 autofocuses from 0.40 m and has a self-timer and tripod mount for hands-free shots.

Should I buy film with the camera?

Yes. Every instant camera is sold without film, and a camera handed over with nothing to put in it cannot be used. Two packs is the right amount: enough for the first evening and the week after it.
