Instant Cameras

The best instant cameras for selfies

A selfie on instant film fails for one of two reasons: the camera cannot focus that close, or the flash blows the face out. Both are fixable, and they are the only things that matter here.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

The Fujifilm instax mini Evo is the best instant camera for selfies, because its screen shows you the shot before it costs you 85 cents. For a cheaper gift, the instax mini 12 has a selfie mirror and a Close-Up Mode that focuses to 0.3 m, which is the actual length of an outstretched arm.

Why instant-film selfies go wrong

Two technical reasons, and neither is obvious in a shop. The first is focus. A simple instant camera is fixed-focus from about 0.3 m, which sounds fine until you realize an outstretched arm is roughly 0.3 to 0.5 m — exactly the distance these cameras need a Close-Up Mode for. Shoot a selfie without switching that mode on and the face comes back soft.

The second is flash. Every simple instax fires its flash on every frame, with an effective range from 0.3 to 2.2 m. A face at 0.4 m is at the very near end of that range, so it gets more light than the camera's exposure system expects and prints pale and flat. That is the washed-out instant selfie everybody has seen.

What to look for

  1. A close-focus setting, not just a mirror. The mirror helps you aim; the close-up mode is what makes the picture sharp.
  2. A screen, if the budget reaches it. A selfie is the one photograph people reshoot. A camera that prints only what you choose pays for its own premium in saved film.
  3. A frame wide enough for the number of faces. One face is fine on a mini. Three faces want a square or a wide print.
  4. Slow-synchro or a long shutter, for indoor selfies. It keeps the background from going black behind a flash-lit face.
  5. Cheap film. You will not nail a selfie first time. At 85 cents a frame that is fine; at $2.37 it is a reason not to try.

The only instax that lets you check the selfie before paying for it.

Buy it for
Anyone who takes several attempts at a photograph of themselves — which is everyone.
Skip it if
A buyer who wants the gift to feel like a film camera. This is a digital camera that prints.
  • A 3.0 inch rear LCD, so you frame and review rather than guess at a mirror the size of a stamp.
  • An f/2.0 lens with autofocus, far brighter than the f/12.7 optic on every simple instax mini.
  • Prints only what you choose, which is the difference between one 85-cent print and four.
  • 100 effect combinations applied before printing, so a flat selfie can be rescued on screen.

Indoor selfies at arm's length without care — the flash fires on every frame.

What about a Polaroid for selfies?

The Polaroid Go Generation 3 has a selfie mirror and a self-timer, and it is small enough to hold out comfortably. It is still a harder recommendation here, for one reason: at about $1.37 a frame, a camera you need three attempts on is an expensive camera. If the recipient wants Polaroid specifically, read instax mini 12 vs Polaroid Go — the selfie hardware is close, and the running cost is not.

A cheaper answer nobody suggests

If the point is prints of the recipient's own face, a phone printer beats every camera on this page. Their phone already has a front camera, a screen, and a thousand selfies on it. A printer turns the good ones into prints at 42 to 85 cents each and wastes nothing. Our pocket printer roundup covers the options, and the cameras that do both jobs are covered separately.

Questions people ask

What is the best instant camera for selfies?

The Fujifilm instax mini Evo, because the 3-inch screen lets you check the shot before any film is spent and its f/2.0 autofocus lens copes with indoor light. The instax mini 12 is the best cheap option: it has a selfie mirror and a Close-Up Mode that focuses from 0.3 m.

Do instant cameras have a selfie mirror?

Most current models do. The instax mini 12, mini 13, mini 41, SQUARE SQ40 and Polaroid Go Generation 3 all have one. A mirror only helps you aim, though — the setting that makes the picture sharp at arm's length is the close-up or selfie mode.

Why do my instant selfies come out white or washed out?

Because the flash fires on every frame and your face is at the near end of its 0.3 to 2.2 m effective range, so it receives more light than the camera expects. Hold the camera a little further out, engage close-up mode, and avoid shooting into a bright window.

Can you take a selfie on an instax mini 12?

Yes. It has a selfie mirror beside the lens and a Close-Up Mode for 0.3 to 0.5 m, which is roughly arm's length. Switch that mode on — without it the camera is focused for subjects further away and the face prints soft.
