instax mini Link 3 vs Polaroid Hi-Print 2x3

Identical cost per print, similar size, completely different print. One is real instant film; the other is a dye-sublimation photograph with Polaroid branding.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

Both cost about 85 cents a print. The instax mini Link 3 prints onto real instax mini film, with the instant-film look. The Polaroid Hi-Print 2x3 is dye-sublimation — sharper and more durable, but not Polaroid instant film, which is the thing most buyers assume it is.

What each print actually looks like

An instax print has the white border, the slightly soft rendering and the warm cast that instant film gives. It looks like what it is. Over a few years it will fade if it sits anywhere bright.

A Hi-Print print is a dye-sublimation photograph: sharper, more color-accurate, with a smoother surface. It looks like a small printed photograph rather than an instant one, and it will last longer.

Neither is better. They are different objects at the same price, and the question is which one the recipient was imagining.

The practical tiebreakers

  • Media availability goes to instax, clearly. instax mini film is in supermarkets and drugstores. Hi-Print cartridges are an online or Polaroid-store purchase. When someone runs out, that difference is the whole experience.
  • Published specifications go to instax. Fujifilm publishes print time, resolution, prints per charge and weight. Polaroid publishes considerably less for the Hi-Print, which makes it harder to recommend confidently.
  • Print size goes to the Hi-Print, marginally — 2 x 3 inches against 2.4 x 1.8, in a different aspect ratio.
  • Starter-set value goes to the Hi-Print. $119.99 for printer plus a cartridge is $10 over the printer alone, which is close to free media.

What beats both

If the aesthetic is not the point, the Kodak Mini 2 Retro prints a larger 2.1 x 3.4 inch dye-sublimation photograph for about 42 cents — half the cost of either printer here, with a laminate pass that makes it the most durable print in the category. On cost and durability it is simply a better purchase; what it does not offer is the instax look or the Polaroid name.

Questions people ask

Does the Polaroid Hi-Print use Polaroid film?

No. It is a dye-sublimation printer using Polaroid Hi-Print 2x3 paper cartridges at $16.99 for 20 sheets — about 85 cents a print. Real Polaroid i-Type instant film is a different product entirely, makes a 4.2 x 3.5 inch print, and costs about $2.37 a shot.

Which is better, instax mini Link or Polaroid Hi-Print?

They cost the same per print, so it comes down to the print itself. instax gives you real instant film with the white border and the characteristic look. The Hi-Print gives a sharper, more durable dye-sublimation photograph. instax also has far better media availability and more published specifications.

Which has the cheaper prints?

Neither — both work out at about 85 cents a print. A 20-exposure instax mini twin pack was $16.99 and a 20-sheet Hi-Print cartridge was $16.99 when we checked on 13 October 2026. For cheaper prints, the Kodak Mini 2 Retro is about 42 cents.

Can the Polaroid Hi-Print print Polaroid-sized photos?

No. It prints 2 x 3 inches. The full-size Polaroid photograph at 4.2 x 3.5 inches only comes out of a Polaroid camera using i-Type, 600 or SX-70 film — no printer produces it.
