Fujifilm instax WIDE 400 review

The only instax that fits a group in frame, with the only instax flash that reaches across a room. It is also 616 grams and takes four AA batteries.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

The instax WIDE 400 makes a 3.9 x 2.4 inch print — roughly 2.2 times the area of an instax mini — at about $1.10 a shot, and its flash is effective to 3 m rather than 2.2 m. That combination is why it is the default wedding guest-book camera. The cost is size: 616 g and four AA batteries.

1. Verdict: the event camera

The print has room for a group and a written message, and the flash actually reaches them.

  • Flash effective to **3 m** against 2.2 m on the minis — the difference between a lit and a dark photograph indoors.
  • Two focus ranges: Normal 0.9-3 m and Landscape 3 m and beyond.
  • A close-up lens and a self-timer lever are included in the box.
  • WIDE film is about **$1.10 a shot** — cheaper per picture than instax SQUARE, despite the much larger print.

Why the wide format exists

An instax mini print is 2.4 x 1.8 inches. Put five people in it and you have five very small faces. The WIDE print is 3.9 x 2.4 inches — roughly 2.2 times the area — and five people in it is a photograph.

There is a second, less obvious consequence that matters just as much: there is room to write. In a guest book, a WIDE print leaves usable space beside the picture for a message, which is exactly what people want to do with it. An instax mini print leaves room for a signature.

The flash is the underrated specification

The WIDE 400's flash is effective from 0.9 to 3 meters. Every instax mini is 0.3 to 2.2 meters. On cameras with no manual exposure control, flash reach is the entire indoor story — beyond it, the photograph is dark and there is nothing you can do.

Three meters rather than 2.2 is the difference between photographing the far side of a dinner table and not. At an evening event, that is the specification that decides whether the camera produces usable pictures.

What it costs to own

WIDE film was $21.99 for a 20-exposure twin pack on 13 October 2026, about $1.10 a shot. That is 25 cents more than instax mini and — counter-intuitively — five cents less than instax SQUARE, for a much bigger print.

An estimate, not a quote: the hardware figure is the manufacturer or retailer listed price shown in each row, and the film figure is whole packs at the prices verified October 13, 2026. Film is rounded up to whole packs because you cannot buy half a pack.

Note the four AA batteries rather than two. At about 100 exposures per set that is a modest but real extra cost, and worth factoring in for an event: carry a spare set.

What it is good at

  • Group photographs. The reason to own it. Nothing else in the instax range does this.
  • Indoor photographs. The 3 m flash reach, again the best in the range.
  • Events. A self-timer lever means the photographer can be in the picture, and the included close-up lens handles the one thing the 0.9 m minimum distance cannot.
  • Cost per square inch. At $1.10 for 2.2 times the area of an 85-cent mini print, it is the best value per unit of photograph in the instax range.

Where it falls short

  • It is big. 616 grams and 162 mm wide. This is not a camera anybody carries casually, and a gift recipient who wanted something pocketable will be disappointed.
  • Four AA batteries rather than two, which adds weight as well as running cost.
  • It cannot focus closer than 0.9 m without the supplied close-up lens, which rules out casual selfies and arm's-length shots — exactly what people instinctively try first.
  • The exposure range is narrower. Lv 10.5 to 15 against the mini 12's Lv 5.0 to 14.5, which means less tolerance in dim conditions despite the better flash.
  • Film is harder to buy. instax mini is in supermarkets; WIDE usually means a camera shop or an order. For an event, order it well in advance.

What published reviews say

Engadget lists the WIDE 400 as its large-film runner-up and credits its "simple operation" with "one-button, fully-automatic shooting" — which, for a camera that will be handed round by wedding guests, is the specification that matters most.

Buying it for an event

If this is for a wedding or a party, the quantity question matters more than the camera choice. Budget about one photograph per two guests plus 20% spare — for 100 guests that is roughly 60 shots, which is three 20-exposure twin packs, around $66 of film. Buy spare batteries, write a three-line instruction card, and for over 100 guests use two cameras so there is no queue. The full method is in how much film for a wedding.

  • [instax SQUARE SQ40](/instant-cameras/instax-square-sq40-review) — smaller, lighter, better-looking, slightly more per shot, and not a group camera.

Who should buy it

Buy the WIDE 400 if the photographs will have more than two people in them, or will be written on. For a wedding guest book it is the right answer and the only instax that genuinely is.

Do not buy it as a general-purpose gift. It is too big to carry, cannot take a selfie without the accessory lens, and its film is harder to find than mini. For everyday use, a mini is the better camera.

Questions people ask

Is the instax WIDE 400 worth it?

Yes for groups, events and guest books — the 3.9 x 2.4 inch print has room for several people and a written message, and the 3 m flash reach is the best in the instax range. No as an everyday camera: it is 616 g, takes four AA batteries, and cannot focus closer than 0.9 m without the included close-up lens.

How much does instax WIDE film cost?

A 20-exposure twin pack was $21.99 when we checked on 13 October 2026, which is about $1.10 a shot. That is 25 cents more than instax mini and slightly less than instax SQUARE, for a considerably bigger print.

Is the instax WIDE 400 good for weddings?

It is the best instax for one. The print leaves room for a handwritten message beside the photograph, the flash reaches across a room, and it includes a self-timer lever. Budget about one photograph per two guests plus 20% spare — roughly 60 shots and $66 of film for 100 guests.

Can the instax WIDE 400 take selfies?

Not easily. Its minimum focusing distance is 0.9 m, which is further than arm's length, so an unaided selfie will be out of focus. The included close-up lens addresses this, and the self-timer lever is the better approach for getting yourself into a group shot.

How many batteries does the instax WIDE 400 use?

Four AA alkaline batteries, good for about 100 exposures per set. That is twice as many cells as the instax mini models, which adds weight and a little running cost — carry a spare set to any event.
