instax mini Link 3 vs HP Sprocket

A film printer against a sticker printer. They are aimed at different people, and only one of them publishes enough specifications to recommend confidently.

By Selena H.Last checked How we pick

The instax mini Link 3 prints real instax film at about 85 cents a shot with fully published specifications. The HP Sprocket makes cheaper peel-and-stick ZINK prints at around 60 cents, but its lineup spans three different print sizes and we could not verify a current US paper price.

The real difference is what the print is for

A ZINK print is a sticker. That is not a drawback — it is the feature, and it is why the Sprocket sells to teenagers. Prints go on a laptop lid, a locker door, a notebook, a water bottle. Nothing else in this category does that.

An instax print is a photograph. It goes in an album, in a frame, pegged on a line, handed to someone. It does not stick to anything, and it is meant to be kept.

So this comparison usually answers itself once you know the recipient. A fourteen-year-old wants stickers; an adult printing holiday photographs wants the instax print.

The Sprocket lineup problem

This is a genuine issue for a gift buyer. HP sells a Sprocket 2x3, a Sprocket Select at 2.3 x 3.4 inches, a Sprocket 3x4, and a Sprocket Photo Booth, at prices reported from under $100 to over $600 — and they take different paper. Buying "an HP Sprocket" without checking which one, and which paper it needs, is how people end up with a printer and the wrong refills.

Fujifilm's range is simpler: the mini Link 3 for mini film and the Link WIDE 2 for wide film, each taking exactly one format.

If cost is the deciding factor

Neither is the cheapest. The Kodak Mini 2 Retro prints a larger 2.1 x 3.4 inch photograph for about 42 cents — well under ZINK and half of instax — with published specifications and a laminate pass that makes it the most durable print here. If what you want is the most prints for the least money, that is the answer rather than either printer on this page.

Questions people ask

Is the HP Sprocket or instax mini Link better?

They suit different people. The Sprocket makes cheaper peel-and-stick ZINK prints at around 60 cents, which is what a teenager wants. The instax mini Link 3 makes real instax film prints at about 85 cents, with fully published specifications and film available in supermarkets.

How much does HP Sprocket paper cost?

We could not verify a current US price — every retailer page we tried returned a 403 or CAPTCHA, so we have not published a figure. ZINK 2 x 3 media generally runs about 60 cents a print based on Canon's $11.99 for 20 sheets, and Digital Camera World reports the same ballpark. Check the current HP price directly.

Are HP Sprocket prints stickers?

Yes, the standard 2 x 3 ZINK paper is sticky-backed and peels off. That is the main practical difference from an instax print, which is a photograph meant for an album or a frame rather than a surface.

Which HP Sprocket should I buy?

Check the print size before anything else, because HP sells a 2x3, a Select at 2.3 x 3.4 inches, a 3x4 and a Photo Booth, and they take different paper. The 2x3 is the standard sticker printer most people mean. Confirm which paper the model you are buying needs.
